SIP (Session Initiation Protocal) is a very flexible signalling protocol which is growing in popularity due to its ease of deployment, management, low cost and scalable capability. SIP was designed to be a general-purpose way to set up real-time multimedia sessions between groups of participants. For example, in addition to simple telephone calls, SIP can also be used to set up video and audio multicast meetings, or instant messaging conferences.
SIP is most widely used to initiate and terminate Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls. SIP was originally designed to mimic the call setup and signaling characteristics of the traditional telephone network over an IP infrastructure and users are identified by a SIP address which is similar to an email address. SIP is a request-response protocal that closely resembles HTTP and SMTP (common protocals used for the world wide web and email)
